You are giving me only isolated battles, not wars. Whether or not Russia is a western country is questionable. It's in eastern Europe due north of asia.

Jeffrey S has the most accurate answer.
And to answer your question, Russia is considered a Western nation. The capital, Moscow is in Europe while just on two-thirds of Russia is in Asia.

Japan defeated Russia in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905, which included the crushing Japanese defeat of the Russian fleet at the Battle of Tsushima. Considering that only fifty years before Japan had been essentially a medieval feudal society, their victory over Russia was particularly amazing.
If you're referring strictly to victories in battles, rather than entire wars, then the Japanese also inflicted a number of defeats on American, British, Dutch, and Australian forces in the early part of World War II, such as Pearl Harbor, the Philippines, Singapore, and the Battle of the Java Sea, to name a few.

What do you define as a "western power?" They clobbered Russia in 1906.
But, to follow on everyone else's answers: The beat the tar out of many Western Nations during their initial expansion in the Pacific around 1940 (particularly the British).

Japanese military forces won several battles surrendering only after atomic bombs were deployed on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Did they lose the war? My question is, "Is there any winner in war?"
ALL participants lose in a war.
