Well, his arrival on the scene caused the very first argument between my mother and father as all of us were glued to the TV set. My dad was a cop, mother a housewife and she LOVED Elvis. My father with a smirk on his face thought Elvis was "a bum who would give his mother an argument if she asked him to put out the garbage." Mom said, "Oh John, he bought his mother a house!" Dad shut up but still never appreciated Elvis. Mom was always nuts about him.
Also, I do remember the teachers and principal giving the young men a hard time because they grew sideburns and pegged their pants. Every generation has it's "thing" but those boys were treated with disrespect. Things settled down when Elvis was drafted and publicly seen getting a haircult and wearing his US Army BDU's.
The Army brought him a lot of respect by the older generation finally.

We all watched his appearance on the Ed Sullivan show.
And my parents watched with more amusement, than anything. The Basset Hound with the top hat, made it amusing
for them I think. I was upset that he was added and it took
away from Elvis's performance. But at that point in time, we
as teenagers, were just glad to see him on TV period. Since
he wasn't making any real appearences anywhere, but back
in his state of Tennessee, at that time, I believe. He hadn't
started touring yet.
I think my mom always liked his music, when she'd hear
my records being played. I don't think they ever saw him
move on stage, since that was verboten by the censors of
that time. And it was all we teenaged girls were dying to see
and couldn't LOL.
When he made his first big tour wearing his gold lame
suit, he came to my city, and at the time, I had just returned
from Disneyland, and didn't get home in time to buy a ticket
before they sold out. But my best friend did, and didn't think
of even buying a ticket for me. She said she didn't know if
I would be able to go. So she went alone, and told me later
how great the show was. So much for a best friend.

I remember my Mom being excited when she first heard Elvis' music on the radio. I didn't understand what the big deal was at the time. It was almost like she hid her attraction for Elvis' music from my Father, but when Elvis was on TV, we all watched and I remember my Dad saying that "Elvis the Pelvis" wouldn't last. In later years, my Dad enjoyed Elvis music probably more than my Mother.

My parents had passed away before the advent of Elvis,I was a twenty year old guy, just completed National Service in the UK and discovering rock'n'roll was great.
Elvis was king,Tommy Steele,Billy Fury and another contemporary of mine,Cliff Richard were big over here.
My girl friend and I queued to see Bill Haley in "Rock around the Clock",I was in full teddy boy fig, drainpipe trousers, drape jacket and of course blue suede shoes with thick crepe soles.
A D.A (Duck's A**e) hairstyle was my crowning glory-wish I'd kept some cuttings!

My parents though Elvis was disgusting, but I remember that they tuned in to Ed Sullivan the first night that Elvis was on television.

You asked a perfect question for me to answer...My oldest sister was only nine when Elvis got big and mind you my Dad was a stagehand for IATSE ( working concerts ) and he came home in an uproar telling my sister " don't you ever ask to go see elvis" ( like she cared at age nine ) . She got even later though...he was at a point of being able to pick what concerts he wanted and my sister told him "Deep Purple" was an orchestra !!!He took the show and was mad when he got home!!

I don't think my Father ever became conscious of him. Nor Elvis of my Father.

My Mother was a classical pianist and I know that in the seventies she had heard of him, but she only took an interest in 'pop' when they wrote their own material...which Elvis didn't.

Which came first...him or Alvin Stardust?

I think my mother was a bit confused by all the fuss. She never really said anything, and I watched him on that Ed Sullivan Show. My dad didn't have too much good to say, but then he never did anyway about any of the music I liked. My mother did like his gospel music.

They did not react at all. They weren't into the new music of Elvis. I was allowed to buy his records, and I was glad. I had the old records he made with the Sun label before he went to RCA.

I played "Baby, lets' play House" over and over and over.
