Yep they are just sleeping and also fish usually have paler colors when you've turned the lights off and they are resting. You'll notice as soon as you've turned the lights back on they slowly get up and their colors will return within about 5 minutes.

First, that is absolutely normal. When they are resting, fish change colors, usually becoming paler, which would allow their darker stripes to show. Second, I hope you are aware of the growing potential of Flowerhorns... They will each reach more than a foot in length and will be in an all out war with each other if they are in a tank less than a few hundred gallons. Unless you have 3 55+ gallon tanks sitting around (which most 13 year olds do not have) and you are willing to have one fish in each tank, two of your Flowerhorns will die and you will have one seriously injured fish.

Yes it is ok to turn the lights out. The stripes come into play for a couple of reasons

1) if they are female they want to mate
2) if it only happens when you turn the lights off, then this is a natural change that fish do to ward off predators
3) if the stripe stays and not female, could be ill.

Yes, it's ok to turn out the lights as that keeps their day / night cycles straight. Fish have both day and night "clocks" just as people do, and turning the lights out around the same time every night let's them know that it's now time to rest.

They are sleeping, the colors fade or change to camouflage them into their surroundings. after the lights are turned back on they will came back in color and start being active again in a couple minutes. there is nothing wrong with them, unless they stay like that all day. i have a 120g reef tank, and my fish and corals do the same thing in the morning. Hope this helps!
