I have a J Crew sweater that is a little too big for me and I would like to shrink it to a smaller size. I think I may have streched it out some wearing a t-shirt under it. The sweater is 40% merino wool and dry clean only. I have heard that washing it at home in the washer would shrink it but I'm scared I may ruin the sweater. Its one of my favorite sweaters. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have already taken a similar wool sweater to the dry cleaners and it did not shrink at all. The dry cleaners told me that if the sweater is cared for properly it will not shrink when dry cleaned.

Hand wash the sweater in cool water and something mild like Woolite. Roll in a towel and squeeze as much water out as you can. Then, using a sweater that fits well as a guide, lay the wet sweater on a flat surface on towels and smooth to the correct size.or just slightly larger. Use straight pins to in the sweater to the towel. It will dry to the new size.

I have shrunk a wool sweater accidentally and believe me it was a size medium and after the washing and drying it would have fit a 4 years old and on top of that it was like card board.
So either wear it baggy or give it away to someone else.It would be a shame to ruin the sweater!

Washing it at home will DEFINITELY ruin it. Take it to the dry cleaners. It will most likely shrink there. My stuff always shrinks the first time I bring it to the dry cleaners.

DO NOT wash your sweater or it will fit a doll once it's dryed. Get it dry cleaned & forget about shrinking it.

Washing it just once will definitely shrink it and probably will ruin it. I ruined my daughter's wool sweater by washing it--it shrunk TOO much and looked like it was shedding.

Hand wash it in hot water and lay it on a flat surface to dry. Washing it in a machine will shrink it too much, and it will lose its shape.Hanging it up will also make it lose its shape, because of the weight of the wet wool.
