Francis Cabot Lowell - - visited Britain in 1810-1812 at age 36 and carefully studied the textile industries of Lancashire and Scotland. He made detailed engineering drawings in the evenings, based on mechanisms he observed during the day's factory tours. He returned to Boston in 1813 and established at Waltham the Boston Manufacturing Company, the first textile mill in America where all operations for converting raw cotton into finished cloth could be performed in one mill building. With Paul Moody he devised an efficient spinning apparatus and a power loom, based on the British models but with technological improvements. He died just three years after building his first factory, but his business did well under his family's control.
