I I have decided that I want to be a teacher. I believe I need a B.S. in Elementary Education because I want to teach somewhere around 5th and 6th grade. What else do I need to do? Does anyone know of a few helpful websites?

The first thing you should do is check out the colleges you are considering. You will have to send in an application, and be accepted before you begin taking classes. After you are accepted you will have to get all of your transcripts sent in (high school, other colleges, etc) If you need financial aid you will have to fill out a FAFSA form at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
The rest you will have to find out from your school. I hope I helped!

Terrific! First, start deciding which schools you'd like to apply to. Contact the advisor or person in charge of that program (most schools have an elementary ed program). They'll tell you how to get into their program and help you from there.

Within the program, you'll be taught how to teach kids from kindergarden through 5th grade (maybe even 6th). You wont be consentrating primarily on the two grades you chose. And you never know, you might change your mind.

Good luck!

Teaching is a vocation. Many people can teach, but some of us are born teachers. Find out if you are born to it. Consider: Do you often find yourself explaining to others how to do a thing? Do you like, nay LOVE, showing/telling another person (without pushiness now) the answer to a conundrum or difficulty? Have you found yourself delighting in telling another person a little- known fact that just came your way?

Then you may be a born teacher.

And to help you find out, why not volunteer to teach at a Sunday/Sabbath school or other institution, Scouts or Big Brothers.

You will enjoy the profession. I do. I hate the bureaucracy mind you!! So I homeschool my children and do Sunday school and other teacher-y things.

Once you reach your junior year in college, start looking into your schools credentialing program. After your BA, you will need to complete the credentialing work - approx 1.5-2.5 years worth, take a few tests and do you student teaching to earn your credential. Seems like alot, but its not really.

good luck!

The easiest thing to do might be to call the school you're planning on attending and ask a counselor, or check out their website.
