I think it's preposterous! Are other states having similar increases?

I think it is smart. Yes, people have rights and should be able to smoke if they want to: However, whether they like it or not, it endangers their health. This way maybe people will realize how much it is costing them and they'll quit. Besides, smoking not only hurts you, but those around you who made the choice not to smoke, but have to put up with yours. Here in Oklahoma, we had the increase also. Around here many wildfires occur that were sparked by cigarette butts being thrown. A firefighter died during one of the fires caused by cigarettes. The cost isn't just what you pay at the cash register.

Even though this eventually could be a "freedom of" problem later I think they'll get away with it as long as the crooked politicians who "accidentally" end up with some of the money.
I don't believe in smoking because I am a multiple cancer survivor. I watched my Grandfather die of lung and throat cancer back when it was still "chic" to smoke.
BUT.....it's a personal freedom and it's unfair. We all do things that are not good for ourselves, why should just one group (smokers) pay for theirs? What about obesity, what about alcoholism (alcohol is legal and it still kills).
Unfortunately it is happening in a lot of states. PROTEST!!

Lots of states are doing this now.
And they know that smokers will just keep on paying the higher prices, no matter how much cigarettes cost.
What else can they do? Quit smoking? Ha!

They are always increasing the taxes on cigarettes. Thankfully, I quit smoking. It might give some people a reason to quit too.

I'm in Wi. and i think it really sucks. not just a dollar a pack but there is also an xtra 5 in some goofy kind of other tax.so that will mean 15.00 more a carton.

Cigarettes are like $5.50 a pack in NJ now. Anyone who pays that kind of money to slowly kill themselves is a bit daft, IMHO.
