We are the land of the free and home of the brave, but it seems to me that everyday there are more and more rules to be followed. Dont get me wrong, there is no other place in teh world I would rather live, but our freedoms seem to be shrinking day by day. Thoughts?

No. Weak, frightened little people keep trading freedom for dubious assurances that they will be 'safer', something I have yet to see.

To be totally free, you would have to endure anarchy. Everyone would do as they wished, without restraint of law. We have to surrender some freedom for the good of society. But we must also be ever-vigilant; as our freedoms are removed by unjust laws, we must stand ready to fight back and remove the corrupt politicians that pass such legislation.

The removal of habeas corpus under the Bush administration is just such a case - the administration has challenged the constitution in many ways, and should be removed. Since congress is unwilling to take action, we the voters should do so at the next election; throwing out of office anyone who was too cowardly to stand up for our rights.

We are free in a matter, but not free to do whatever we want. We have laws, some meaningful and some just stupid. In a way, I agree with you. Freedom is shrinking. But, the laws they make all have a meaning to help the country. Some, laws, are stupid and should have never been passed.

But, America is still wonderful and everything we do in our everyday life we all take for granted.

We are not totally free. We have traded many of our freedoms in exchange for a measure of security.

I suggest you read on the notion of the "social contract". The classic sources for that philosophy are John Locke and Hobbs, although there are many more.

My freedoms aren't shrinking. I went to the college of my choice and got my degree in my own personal area of interest (Political Science). I moved to the part of the country where I wanted to live. I met and fell in love with the man of my choice and we got married. We bought a house in a great neighborhood. We both found jobs we love in professions we are good at, and we make nice salaries. We are free to travel as we please, worship or not as we please, send our daughter to public or private school as we please.

We are free to join whatever clubs, associations or societies we want, and pursue our interests. We are free to contact our elected officials, to agree or disagree with them as we see fit, to campaign or work to help elect the candiates of our choice. We are free to vote and to participate in our society in a productive way.

Honestly, I am as free as I have ever been in my 39 years of life. There is nothing I want to do that I am not free to do.

Hello!
I would say yes we are definitely free, free to be imprisoned by the forces that be.

Your question is so vague that I would have to know what type of "free" you are referring to. Free to make legal choices, yes. Free to speak out about what ever your heart desires, depends on who you are and what or who you're speaking about. Free to come and go as you please, depends on your situation and status in life. Free to change lies that have been accepted as truths, Hell no! Free to sincere equality, another Hell no!

Am I free to force my beliefs on other people? No. Am I free to break the laws of this land? No. Am I free to come and go as I please, am I free to worship as I please, am I free to do anything within the laws of this country, Can I choose who to vote for, can I choose to even exercise my vote, am I free to choose my career, am I free to fight for my rights, you betcha. I have a lot of freedoms. I can even choose which television or radio station I want to listen to because my choices are many.

No, we are not really free. I want to stay here also but would like to see a lot of changes. Of course I am sure all of us would like that.
