Pontiac G6 Oil Change

Those % marks or time periods can be changed. You may have access to these changes if there's a display. If it wasn't set correctly when you bought it, that could be the reason. I would read the manuel "at least" is worst case. It's normally every 3000 miles, but the manuel will tell you for sure. The dealer or random person giving you advise over the phone is not documented infomation if you hae a problem in the future. If you have a problem with anything. they may try to blame the poor oil change schedule. It's not worth it, if your not sure, change it. If you go somewhere other than the deal keep your documents to show you've kept the car on a maintenance schedule.

A little history lesson....

From early 60s and back, cars did not came with oil filters and people changed the oil at about 3,000 miles. Back then 3,000miles was a lot of mileage since people did not drove as much as we do. Oil filters were optional devices...

The tradition carry on until these days.

Today's lubricants and filters allow us to run more with less oil changes. If you read your Owner's Manual the recommended oil change is listed there. That means the Petroleum Base oils. My dad's Audi suggested as far 7,500 miles. In Germany people changes the oil 2 times a year or sometimes once a year. The car manual says X amount of miles or 1 year whichever comes 1st.

Follow your manual and forget the 3,000miles that is a waste of money! In the Military, we participate on a Oil Analysis Program, to test the quality and health of motor oil on ground vehicles and aircrafts. The oil is not changed unless it comes from the lab and says that is jacked up. In more than 20 years, I saw a couple of truck engines oil replaced due to contamination from Fuel on a aircraft due to a bad bearing or moisture content. That is how I learn the racket of Quick Oil Change type business. Put the fear on the drivers.

Quick Oil Change racket wants your business so they tell you to come back after 3,000 miles even if they put Mobil 1. Synthetic oils can last up to 15,000 miles. I change mine when the car computer tells me and is 2 times a year or about 7,500 miles. The engine is clean as a whistle !

The additives in synthetic motor oil will last up to 15,000 miles. But metal particles small enough to pass through the oil filter build up, at which point, engine wear becomes excessive. This mileage occurs at 6,000 miles. This is the reason to change synthetic or regular motor oil at 6,000 miles or earlier. Oil filters do not pick up 100 % of the metal particles. Usually it is 98 to 99 %.

I'm sure Pontiac lists a longer drain interval but 5,000 miles is fine especially if you use Mobil1 full synthetic oil. This is my factory schedule on our new (back then) 04 Toyota LE Camry.

3,000 mile drain intervals is for older cars which see town driving only People like me who are old women trying to hold on to an old winter beater.
