If this is to be a fact based debate, yours is the harder side. However, you will find information specifically for debaters, with links to both sides, at

The best approach for you may be the retribution argument.

Be prepared to hear the following:
126 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides and isn’t a guarantee we won’t execute innocent people.

The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in those that don’t.

We have a good alternative. Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. It is sure and swift and rarely appealed. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty.

The death penalty costs much more than life in prison, mostly because of the legal process which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people.

The death penalty isn't reserved for the worst crimes, but for defendants with the worst lawyers. It doesn't apply to people with money. When is the last time a wealthy person was on death row, let alone executed?

The death penalty doesn't necessarily help families of murder victims. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.

Problems with speeding up the process. Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person.

I'm from Texas... I'm not for the death penalty at all!!!!
I can tell you an argument you will have to dispute... and I'd like to know how you will do it!
Innocent people have been killed because of the death penalty! Some have been lucky and made it off death row (years later) but others have been murdered! How will you justify even ONE innocent person being murdered by our government?
www.theexonerated.com
Also how is it a punishment for the guilty to be killed? Isn't it more of a punishment to be left in a tiny cell for the rest of your life (if life in prison really meant life in prison)... If I committed a crime I would rather die then sit in a cell!
Lastly, did you know it costs less money for our government to keep people in jail then to kill them?
"In 1992, the Dallas Morning News concluded that a death penalty case costs an average of $2.3 million, about three times the cost of imprisoning someone in a single cell at the highest security level for 40 years."

These are the points you'll be arguing against.... What will you say? Food for thought...

Sorry, i've got no longer time to examine your total spiel. yet certainly some (word 'some') women human beings given the legal perfect to make the alternative will certainly p.c. to to have an abortion and for this reason reason the dying of a foetus, if the being pregnant or the assumption of having to elevate a newborn is unwelcome to them. on the different hand the 'professional-lifers' rigidity females who've been raped to hold the ensuing infant. the two circumstances are unwelcome and in elementary terms your very own ethics can be certain your very own place.

Why do you believe the death penalty is a good idea if you can't find anything to substantiate your view ?
