Hi Jen, I couldn't believe when I saw this question. Just last night in bed, this same question popped up in my mind, and I knew how to answer it and I wanted to know everyone's. was trying my best to phrase it the right way but I could never do it. I saw this question now and just couldn't believe it :).
Ok so my answer would be.. when a senior colleague once....said this to me: "It's All....good, All the time". I know this statement will make many tough times seem more bearable. I will not forget this ever.
Another was when I was in middle school. In an art class, the girl sitting next to me, looked at my craft and said aloud (in our native language): she has talent in her hands. I can never ever forget that. Even now, almost 20 yrs later, when I start having doubts or am at a crossroads about my true passion, I remember her words and feel good about it. It guides me.

"I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon."
-President G.W. Bush
I saw the events as they unfolded on 9/11 from the Hudson River. I was on the water when the President made this statement so I only heard later on the news. But for the people in and around New York City, these were among the most important words we have ever heard spoken by any Commander-in-Chief.

It wasn't so much uttered to me as it was uttered in my presence. My DAD and three brothers were fighting over the fact my father was caring for their Mother at our house. They wanted to put her in a home and declare someone else overseer of her financial holdings. They went to court and brought a court order to the house with a policeman to remove her and her stuff. My dad just left to the garage and before he did, turned and said to them. Damn you, and damn anyone of my kids that have anything to do with the lot of you vipers. I shall never have anything to do with you anymore. True to his word, disowned one son who thought better to go live at his uncles house instead of his own fathers house. Didn't speak to him even when dieing 27 years later. I have not seen my cousins on my fathers side side since 1976. Have no intention to either as they have made no effort to contact me. My Mothers side of the family was welcomed very well and very much loved by that man of uncompromising principles! When he spoke it was a truism or a joke for everybody! He taught me to chose my words very well and believe in what i say and do. I learned that early in my Life, especially that day!

"Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt"
From Vonnegut's Slaughter House Five, on a tombstone.
Celebrate the ugly things, because they're just as important...in fact, they might define us even more. Notice the answers above either come out of love or a moment when everything around us seems to crumble. At the end....it's all beautiful when we look back, because it's ours.

When I felt very bad after a fight with some one, my neighbour told me, DO NOT TAKE THE ACTUAL MEANING of the words said when one is very angry. Just ignore the words. he said. And I follow the advice through my lifetime..

So far, on my mothers death bed, I leaned in to kiss her, she looked up at me and said "you know that I have loved you the most, you have been my life." she died 4 hours later.
