Companionship with animals and careful observation will lead one to see there there is no qualitative difference between humans and other animals. Most people just don't pay attention.

The Hebrew says that animals were created with souls, but that is not the eternal thing that a spirit is which only humans have. Soul is like the emotions, ever seen a dog that knows it is in trouble? Everything with the breath of life has a soul. Only man has a spirit.

sup dude - Genesis is the written record of the Hebrew's oral tradition regarding the origins of the universe and their heritage. It is a legendary story like other indigenous culture on every continent.
It really shouldn't be taken literally as the culture that penned it doesn't. Most Judaic commentary looks at that story in a completely poetic light and attempt to pull wisdom from the allegory not the literal word.

You said go with the gut when in doubt. It would appear that what is 'in' the animals is 'in' us. Western religious thought has always tried to put the human animal in a higher place than all other animals and that just isn't the case in nature.

It refers to the everyday breath of life i.e.breathing, not a soul. If animals had a soul there would be numerous references to it in the Bible like there is to the soul of humans.
