The tach doesnt work because its always going to 1000rpms, 8000rpms over and over so i cant get an actual reading. It does this at idle or during acceleration, so the actual rpms have nothing to do with it.

If mechanically driven, hardened grease can cause that as well as a sharp kink in the cable. Remove the cable, pull out the inner cable and clean both well with solvent, oil it up and replace, making sure any bends are large radius and not sharp.

If electronic, then you need to look for a loose or damaged wire connection. It probably ties into the hot side of the ignition coil.

I had a '77 Yammie do that to me, but not over that great an RPM range. Shortly after it started doing it, (About three weeks if memory serves me correctly.) the needle fell off! I went to the local bike graveyard and bought a used one complete with cable for about $15.00 and just replaced it. Simple bolt off, bolt on deal. Then unhook the old cable and pop the new used one in hole the old one came from. Yeah, I said new used. Only way I could think of to describe it.

I don't think it was the exact model tach, but it worked well enough. It showed about 40-60 RPM lower than I was used to. Now I don't even bother with a tach. I let the motor tell me when to shift., so if this one goes out, it's staying out. Good luck finding one where you are. There were plenty of places to get used bike parts in CA when mine went nuts.

some bikes have electronic tachs. a short or loose connection can make them fluctuate. A mechanically driven Tach doesn't usually fuctuate, if it goes bad, it usually just stops working. so I'd guess yours is electronic. Sometimes the tach itself just goes bad and needs to be replaced. I'd have a qualified mechanic check it out.

If it's a mechanical unit instead of electrical, either the cable has too tight a bend, it needs greased, or it needs a new cable.

Your tachometer cable is binding. You need to lubricate the tachometer cable.
