I had a pre-cooked spiral ham for Christmas Day and now I have the bone and some meat left over. Beside the baking soda and aspirin (good ideas) to cut down the farts, what's the rest of your recipes?

We make Frijoles a la Charra with that nice ham bone.

1 pound dry pinto beans , picked through and rinsed
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 pound bacon or ham
1 onion, chopped
2 fresh tomatoes, diced
1 (3.5 ounce) can sliced jalapeno peppers
1 (12 fluid ounce) can beer
1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Place pinto beans in a slow cooker, and completely cover with water. Mix in garlic and salt. Cover, and cook 1 hour on High.
Cook the bacon and ham in a skillet over medium high heat until evenly brown, but still tender. Drain about half the fat. Place onion in the skillet, and cook until tender. Mix in tomatoes and jalapenos, and cook until heated through. Transfer to the slow cooker, stirring into the beans.
Cover slow cooker, and continue cooking 4 hours on Low. Mix in the beer and cilantro about 30 minutes before the end of the cook time.

This can also be made on the stove top.

Note: Dont season beans until the very end, or they will be tough.

my mom always made pea soup but my kids didn't like beans so I made a vegetable barley ham soup that was great. I used the ham bone and whatever ham left over, onions, celery, garlic, small cubed potatoes, small diced carrots and barley and cooked it for several hours, the potatoes help absorb the extra salt from the ham and at the end I add whatever leftover cooked veggies I have left, the potatoes also thicken the soup naturally without having to add a thickener. Its what Rachael Ray would call a stoup. not a soup and not a stew, kind of in between. If you like beans, open a can of white or lima or whatever beans you like and they also will help thicken it.Don't forget to put enough water to cover the bone and veggies. Happy New Year to you all.

I love split pea soup.
Buy one package of split peas.
Drain split peas to remove any junk.
Place split peas in kettle of water, add salt, pepper, onion bits, and tiny cut carrots. (carrots optional).
Put the ham bone in there and cook on medium to low heat.
Stir frequently.
When the mixture becomes completely liquidy, it is done. It usually doesn't take longer than an hour or so.
You may add milk is desired. I always add a bit of comino (cumin) to the mixture just to taste.
This is a very warm, delicious, comfort soup.

I never have cared much for peas, but I adore the split pea soup. I discovered this in a small deli that served the soup with a pastrami sandwich. Yummy.

(This recipe also works very well for black-eyed peas, which you need to make for good luck on New Year's Day. You can also add any extra spice you enjoy.

Happy New Year.

You gave me a chuckle. lol!

Now to get down to serious business.

Boil the Ham bone and 1 sliced onion, for about an hour. Slow boil, with lid on.

Add baby Lima beans. Follow cooking directions on the beans. It will probably take 1/2 hour to 2 or 3 hours for beans.
If the beans are last falls beans, they will cook faster. Cook until tender.

You may not need salt, depending on how salty the ham is.

Just before serving add 2 Tablespoons of butter.

Serve with Corn Bread and honey or jam.

My mouth is watering. Ham and Baby Lima beans are one of my favorites.

As far as the other goes, you know the saying, "Beans, beans, the magical fruit. Makes your pants go rooty, toot, toot."

Now look what you've done to me. Here I am, a proper lady, being very crude. Sorry about that.

Here's a twist to the norm posted already. Put your ham bone on to cook with enough water to cover it and make sure it stays covered while cooking down--add a couple of onions quartered, a bunch of new potatoes cleaned with eyes cut out and quartered, a few baby carrots or slices a bit of garlic, and then agter the rest is cooked add cabbage---wow what a meal. Just cook till the cabbage is still a bit crisp and a little dab of vinegar really sets it off. Old time boiled dinner. add a bit of baking soda at the last it also keeps the cabbage green. and reduces the farts yo ho

I always make split pea soup with the leftover spiral ham bone. Add a small pkg of split peas, garlic, chopped celery, onion, and carrots, a bay leaf with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil & simmer away. Love it with a loaf of crusty garlic bread. Oh gosh, now I'm getting hungry!

* Enough water to cover the ham bone ... not just the bay leaf.

I love making pea soup with the ham bone, or lima beans and ham. 15 bean soup is good. Lots of great recipes using ham.

Also, scalloped potatoes and ham are great too

Boil the bone in a pot of water 4 to 6 quart pot according to how much meat is left, Take out the bone and throw in some cubed potatoes, Chopped onion and half as much chopped celery, Simmer for an hour and throw in some corn when almost done. Pour some whole milk in and a tablespoon or so of margarine (margerine optional.) Use as much milk as you like depending on what thickness you prefer. Oh and call it "Corn Chowder." *smile* Edit: Throw the meat back in the soap Dan !!!!

How about split pea soup. You can buy the peas in a bag
cook them with water and a little onion, add the ham bone and of course, salt and pepper. You can always add peas to the mix. Delicious.
