If a child does something bad enough that warrants a spanking there needs to be a cooling off period of 5-10 minutes.
Confine the kid to the bathroom where he can contemplate his actions and you cool off.

It is often those who lash out straight away that leads to so much child abuse.
As a young boy I was on the receiving of many a clout from my father, hard enough to send me sprawling.
As a young adult it was a clenched fist,

I was beaten and spanked also. Yes, and I've never been to jail. I just considered suicide a lot. If I hadn't met Jesus Christ and been rescued by him, I would have taken my life at age 18 through an overdose. I believe in mild/appropriate spankings for small, unreasoning children. If it leaves a mark it went too far and its abuse to me. If a child is not told why they are being spanked and reassured with love/hugs afterwards then it is also abuse to me. edit: I raised my children with love and a few spankings. One more than the other as she was more defiant and prone to doing her own thing until forced to stop. The other child much less, although she was just sneakier and probably should have been swatted a few times more. They are both wonderful adults. my first, rebel daughter nearly died on the back of a motorcycle at 2am with beer inside herself and the driver. She nearly died and broke multiple bones, teeth and jaw and missed her jugular by 1/4 inch. This "cosmic" spanking turned her around in a huge way and she has grown up fast and straightened out (NOT that I ever think it was good that she was hurt so badly - God has more guts than I ever would and he let her come close to the edge)

...I am not a child abuser. A spanking, done in a loving, controlled way, does not hurt a child, but helps to give kids boundaries, and builds respect for parents.
...As a parent you must have control - it is in the child's best interest and yours also. You find this out if/when you are in a dangerous situation, and you MUST have compliance, like when you are crossing a busy street.
...We spanked for defiance, disrespect, and disobedience; we did no "new age" methods, since we know the Bible has worked and worked well for thousands of years.
...Using modern methods does not teach respect for authority, nor do they get the child's attention, they only teach the the child to delay obedience, besides wasting your money on psychologists.

Spanking is the easy way out. He was acting up at Walmart yesterday so I found him a corner to get in. Other people looked, but they don't say anything because we all know they show their butts when they are out thinking they can get away with it.

There is a time and a place for both.

Spanking should only be use when the child is going to hurt someone, something or themselfs.

Spanking is humiliating, so be creative. If that doesn't work, lock the little tyke in the closet.
