Ayrton Senna is the greatest racer that Formula 1 has ever seen.

Well that you cannot say. There was Schumacher, the 7 time world champion, winning 91 GPs. Then there's Senna, King of qualy and definitely a fast and passionate driver, no questions about his skills at 3 crowns and 41 GPS before being cut short of life back at the 94 Imola. But then there is Prost, 4 WDCs and 51 GPs, a classic in his own way. And last, one that tend to be forgotten, El Maestro himself Fangio, 5 WDCs with four different teams at 24 wins.

So saying one is better than the other would be an insult to the other I say. But saying they are among the best is much more fair. Since they stride in different times/era comparing them would simply be too hard due to the circumstances you have to account for.

There are clearly four great drivers:
Fangio who won 5 world championships with four different teams.
Senna: Who won 41 grand prix and 3 World Championships, and had the most awesome driving.
Prost: Won 51 GP´s and 4 World Championships.

And Schumacher who won 91 GP´s 7 World Championships and give Ferrari a Drivers Championship after 21 years.

i think Fangio Should be considered the best because of the time, the driver was probably as important as the car, and he proved with 4 different teams.

Probably Michael Schumacher for going to a team that had no clue about how to win a race at the time and rebuilding the team so to speak.

Arguably Schumacher’s greatest ever win was also his first for Ferrari in torrential rain in Spain in 1996.

After dropping from third to ninth at the start, the reigning champion sailed back up through the field picking off the Benettons for third, then second by lap nine before cruising past Jacques Villeneuve for the lead on lap 12.

Three laps later he was 15s clear and in a league of his own. His fastest race lap was 2.2s quicker than anyone else. A truly stunning drive in horrendous conditions.

Other than that, how about Niki Lauda for surviving an horrific crash, the priest giving him the last rites at the track, only missing 2 races and still coming second in the WDC by a point. Then in a comeback, winning another drivers title in 1984.

well, i have been watching for ten or twelve years but ive researched the past and seen documentaries. the obvious answer is michael schumacher the man broke every record. thats in term of numbers, records etc....but fangio was a big winner, maybe in a more technical sense. fangio only won 5 to schu's 7, but fangios era in the 50s was the most dangerous ever and drivers dying then was not uncommon at all,so the sitution was alot different then.alot argue senna would have been best if he lived, i think schu and him were closely matched but schu had proved in the brief period her raced senna that he can stay in front of him. hope this helped.

Despite all the goings on this year in F1
My vote is with Alonso

However there is no denying that with out the brilliance of past drivers (Schumacher, senna) the sport would not be what it is today.

Most every one will agree that people whom race aim for the WDC title.

Since Shu has 7, I'd have to say he's the best. Especially when you consider the time frame & erras which they were won (with and without driver's aides, two different teams, etc) and not to mention: He (yeah, I know it's team work-however) brought Ferrari back to respectability!

When he took his first year at ferrari, they hadn't a clue what reliability and handling ment...or at least they forgot...LOL!

Schumacher is F1.

Period.
