That depends on how much of an opportunist Bush is...and how much of an idiot.

For one thing it is obvious he has been pressing not only for continued military action in Iraq but also for the invasion of Iran. I expect he believes this is because of the popular support he was able to garner following the last war, and like a good little Skinner-box rat he wants to press the "war" button and get another treat. If he is an opportunist he may well decide to act against Pakistan in this way.

But this would be idiocy on several accounts. First of all there are far more Pakistani citizens than Iraqi citizens living in the United States. To isolate and anger them would be a mistake, and to endanger their families in their homeland would be downright stupid.

Secondly, the proximity of Iran to Iraq makes it a fairly easy shift logistically, but determining to fight two separate wars on a divided map like that is an invitation for technical, logistical, economic and geographic problems. Transport, distribution, and other elements of the basic needs of troops become much more complicated when you add more "theaters" to current conflicts.

Finally, the backlash from such an attack would surely gel the support of extremists rather than frighten them into submission. We would just be adding to the list of Islamic groups that hate us.

If he is that much of an idiot not to see this, then yes, he will promote another war.

I know this is late because the death of Benazir Bhutto has already caused violence in Pakistan. I don't think it will cause another Iraq because the US is already stretched too thin. If the US gets involved, the entire picture in three countries is going to change. What do you think India's response is going to be? That may be the important question if things get out of hand. Will China see an opportunity? Let's not be short-sighted here.
By the way, my sincerest condolences for the senseless death of a thoughtful and intelligent woman.

Pakistan has been in political turmoil since Pervez Musharraf's coup in 1999. No, it would not. Musharraf's government is stronger compared to that of Iraq.
