Okay, here are a few things you can do.
One is to read widely, not just popular fiction but, classics as well. Look up words you don't know routinely. (I like marion websters online dictionary or on the computer it is a bit easier and faster)
Two is to get a good dictionary and every day take a word and use that word correctly 10 times during that day. It is important that you use a dictionary so that you have the definition there.
Three...if you have a Nintendo DS...there is a word game called My Word geared to helping you increase your vocabulary.
There are also word calenders that give you a new word every day and books on increasing your vocabulary. Crossword puzzles may also help not only vocabulary but, your brain in general.
Reders Digest magazine used to have a page that is a vocabulary test and it has the definitions of the words in the answers so that you can find the meaning of the words that you don't know.
Using those words is helpful because that helps to build fluency which, it sounds like you are having trouble with.

Hello. The best way to extend your vocabulary is to read everything you can get your hands on - whether it's light reading or harder reading. Look up in the dictionary any words you come across in which you don't know the meaning, then use them in sentences for the next couple of days. That'll give you confidence and a bigger pool of words to describe things. Email me and I'll tell you some more things you can do.

Really, you can improve your vocabluary by just reading a lot- it doesn't matter what you read. If you prefer novels, read those. If you like non-fiction books or biographies, read those. You can even improve your vocabulary greatly by just reading the newspaper. Every time you see a word you don't know, take the time to look it up right then, or write it down in a list of words to look up for later. I also like to include the sentence I found the word in, so you can see the context of the word clearly once you get the definition. Good for you trying to boost your vocabulary!

The easiest way I can think of, without having to pick up a thesaurus and read through all that boring material would be to have some intellectual conversations with intelligent people. Read news stories from Time magazine, read a classic novel with difficult words, or just try to learn one or two new words a day.
If you've ever seen the movie "Clueless", the blonde tries to teach her friend a new word and tells her to use it in a sentence...if I remember correctly, it was "sporadically"!

Make a lifetime commitment to reading widely. Always have a book you're reading.
You can also buy vocabulary builder books. There's at least one graded series of these.
Talk often. Join a Toastmasters group, or other groups which will upgrade your talking skills.

Yes, read. But read a dictionary. My cousin did this when he was only 8 years old and now at age 10 has the most affluent vocabulary of anyone I know. (I had to put that word in there just for ha-has!)
Affluent means...

Grab a thesaurus! Best thing in the world. You can also go the thesaurus.com, I think.
Other than that, read whatever you can get your hands on. Read a lot of literature, not just your every-day paper back novel.
