drops a note in front of me with her name and number on it. What is the appropriate response in your opinion? The girl I was meeting and I are single. I had replied to the girl dropping the note with a thank you. Any answer is welcome (funny, serious or way out of line).

The girl (Sherri) I was meeting is one of the people I hung out with in High School 20 some years ago. She is very beautiful and out going. Back in the day I wanted to ask her out but she was always dating someone. When the girl that dropped the note left Sherri called her white trailer trash and said I should call the number and give some kind of nasty message. I snickered, pocketed it and discussed some of the things I should say. A good laugh. Sherri and I are going to meet again. There is no commitment of any kind at this point with her but I am interested.
In reply: No Im not normally a chick magnet since Im 100 lbs overweight. The girl must have been listening in and found my demeanor interesting. I find that once I speak with women they find me interesting but just from seeing me; no luck.

If you're meeting Old Girl under date-type circumstances, the gentlemanly thing is to thank New Girl with a smile and then to discard the note...unread...as soon as New Girl leaves the scene.
If you're meeting Old Girl under just pals circumstances, thank New Girl with a smile and pocket that puppy.
You owe Old Girl no apology either way for an unsolicited approach by New Girl.
P.S. Sherri was out of line referring to the woman as "white trailer trash." If she's really that hot, that may be part of the deal...maybe Mysterious Girl was intrigued that you could land a hottie.

"What is the appropriate response..." to whom? The girl who dropped her name/number or the girl you were with? If it is the girl who dropped her name/number, maybe you should call her up (thank her for giving you the opportunity to know each other better), ask her out for lunch at the same restaurant and see what goes on from there.
Re the girl you were having lunch with, was she bothered by this? If not, then just don't sweat. There should be response nor explanation to her.

Are you seriously dating this woman? - if not then call the other if you wish - but if you are dating this woman -you should have said nothing and you should have trashed the note - in front of her. Would you want a another guy to hit on your woman right in front of you?

Do you know the girl who dropped the note, or was it out of the blue? Very flattering if it's the latter case, but rude to your date.
