I ordered an item off of ebay for $30 shipping included. The seller screwed up and sent me the wrong item, or mislabeled it in the auction. I ordered for a 2002 model vehicle and they sent for a 2003 model vehicle. There are differences on model years.

I e-mailed the seller and asked if there was a way to fix the situation since the 2003 model isn't compatible with what I have. They issued a refund. I still have the item. What should I do? I'm asking because if I send it back then I'm out $5 for shipping from the mess. Should I send the item back or refund all the money back to them and resell the item on ebay?

I should add the item can't be defective. It is the glovebox manuals for the vehicle, not an actual part.

With a lot of companies, you pretty much eat the shipping...even if it was their fault. A few major places like Amazon ect...have a built-in return shipping label, but smaller/independent places don't have that contingency.

Before you decide on any course of action, I'd at least try and contact the sellers to see if they'd be willing to pay for return shipping. Also, check on the original item webpage and see what their return policy is as they might have it stated there.

The best option would be to return the item. Reselling it isn't too safe a bet since the item is specific to a certain make and model and depends on a limited clientele. Contact the seller. The worst they can say is no.

Contact the seller and ask if they want the item returned and if they do then if they will give you the refund for the shipping. If they won't then perhaps you can work a deal with them for the part you really wanted.

Honesty is always the best policy and eBay sellers get ripped off so much at this time of the year that he/she should appreciate your honesty.

Since it's a book, it cost you only around $2 to mail it back Media Mail. Since the seller already refunded you, you don't have to but it would just be a nice thing to do.

is P.O.D an option? (Do they still even do that?) I would try going that route if you can. If not, I would contact them and let them know they'll need to cover the shipping if they want their item back. Remember, you now have the upper hand in this situation, so don't let them bully you.
