About every other time I try to start my truck it makes a grinding sound like the starter is not engaging the fly wheel all the way. I just assumed the starter was going out, so I replaced it. Its still doing exactly the same thing. Sometimes it starts right up. Sometimes it makes the grinding sound, I turn the key back, and then I try it again and it starts right up. the batteries are putting out 12.6V, so I don't think thats the problem. What else could it be?

Its a 2004 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 Diesel.

sounds like it needs at least 1 spacer shim between the starter......it was probably built on a friday. you can get these anywhere...or it might need one taken out,if it has any...may need new battery cables,,,selonoid lacking the juice to engage the starter.

sounds more like the teeth on the flywheel are worn.

Your flywheel might be missing teeth or just be miss aligned.
