By lookikng at the music next to the clef. If there are no sharps or flats next to it that is the key of C. If there is a flat on the second line from the bottom, it is the key of F..... etc. A key is a group of notes or chords that sound good together, for example the key of C has a primary chord (C), a secondary chord (F) and tonic 7th chord (G7). the key tells you how many sharps or flats to play, if there are any. key of C has no sharps or flats. one flat is key of F, one sharp is key of G. this explains how to read music better than I can in this small space.
