The first record I ever bought was "Jenny Jenny" by Little Richard , then Elvis came along ., followed by Motown and the singers from Philadelphia . Chuck Berry has endured the test of time. I played Brook Benton non-stop until my Mom started to like it too. There is not one favourite that I can single out because they are all a part of my history. I think I'd have to say Smokey Robinson and The Miracles were my favourite .(have to have a direct answer or Yahoo will get out the V-gun.)

Yep, and I just had a senior moment because I can't remember who did "Magic Carpet Ride" but I liked them a lot too.
Another senior moment coz I can't remember the name of the group that Eric Clapton was in before he went solo.
I also remember the Strawberry Alarm Clock, "incense, peppermints"
Paul Revere and the Raiders.
Temptations.
Gladys Knight and the Pips.
SInce you asked for group, I will not include my favorite solo artists.

from what I read in other answers it doesn't seem my rock and roll is their rock and roll era. I am a child of the 50's and I loved Bobby Rydell and Paul Anka,I also loved the Platters and the Kingston Trio. Later in the 60's I loved Abba and The Mama's and the Papas. I still have all their records and tapes and play them as I clean the house or drive my car. Those were wonderful days and no one can top that era for great people and songs.

Beatles forever, but they were really the turn in the road for the rock n roll era, weren't they? I'm sitting here listening to the All-Beatles station on the computer. I just loved the whole "British Invasion" time.

Rolling Stones I had friends sleep out overnight to get tickets in 1976 or 77 thereabouts for their supposedly last tour. Still have my ticket stub says teh band is The Cockroaches. there was a lot of hype and secrecy surrounding the event. Small venue The Fox Theater in Atlanta, just a couple of thousand and Blue Oyster Cult and Patty Smyth played too.
