When purchasing eyeliner, lipgloss, eyeshadow, and other small items, I think the smarter choice would be to go with drug store brands as they are much cheaper and if you dont like the color the price wont be leaving a hole in your pocket. For foundation, concealer, and other things that require exact matching of skin tone, its better to get dept. store brands as they will match your skin better. If you know your shade, however, go with drug store brands if you can.

I defiantly did not want to pay the department store prices, but when I finally broke down and tried Perscriptives foundation, I fell in love. Everything always turned me orange from the Wal-Mart brands, and this was a fantastic find!
I think everything else is pretty good from the cheaper brands. I have $1 lip gloss and $19 lip gloss. Love them both and won't ever splurge again that much. When it comes to eyeliner I do go for Avon because it tends not to leave the dark cirlces like the super cheap $1 dollar ones. Rimmel is the best for non smudging and great looking mascara! Have fun girl!

I have to say that yes, department store brands are a lot better. Mascaras are one instance to the contrary, as you can get good drugstore ones. Avon has the best ones from what I have found though. Foundations, I hear that department stores are better. But as far as eyeshadows and eyeliners go, I only use prestige brands because I find that they have more selection as far as colours go and they are more richly pigmented. Now for my lips, I usually use the CO Bigelow Mentha lip shines so those are fairly inexpensive in the grand scheme of things.

Department store brands are just more expensive because of packaging and advertising involved in selling the product.

Lip gloss -- dollar store, cocoa butter. Much better for you as Lip Glosses are mostly composed of parafin and/or petrolatum which do nothing for your lips, but dry them out by sealing out moisture. Olive oil and Crisco are super for chapped lips.

Eye liner....ever tried using a dark shade of eye shadow, moistened, apply with brush? All the colors!

If you want to pay for the name brand and packaging, your choice.

It depends. For foundation I tend to buy at department stores because they have a wider range of colors. Moisturizer or treatments for my skin I splurge. My mascara, cleansers, or if I want to try the trendy stuff I go to the drugstore first.

In some cases. I normally get my makeup from dept. stores. You can go to drug stores and get cheaper makeup but its not as good. The drug stores carry brands like neutrogena and loreal while the dept. stores carry brands like cargo

Some are, but most makeup is more or less the same. I have some makeup from Walgreens, and some from Sephora, and for the most part I don't see a difference.
