Well, you can cut off the the branches and put them in a inconspicuous corner of your backyard which will provide shelter for birds and other wildlife. You can also use evergreen branches as mulch to prevent frost heaving, a problem that occurs when the repeated freezing and thawing of soil pushes plants out of the ground.
Use the trunk in place of a pole. Attract birds to your yard by mounting a bird feeder or bird house to the “pole.” This rustic bird heaven blends in especially well in wooded areas.
Lastly, you can use it for firewood and if ambitious, make coasters out of the trunk.
Just a few ideas.

Some people leave their Christmas tree up and decorate it according to different holidays. Like for Valentines day you can put a bunch of heart ornaments on it. Also, when there isn't a holiday around the corner you can just decorate it with your favorite ornaments. A friend of mine has one with zebra's on it.

I will never forget a few years ago, after we had all opened our presents at my grandparents house. My grandpa said to take down the tree, when my grandma didn't do it, he threw the tree out the front door....decorations and all! LOL! That was that last year my grandma put up a tree.

If it's a real one, put it in your backyard and hang some pinecones covered in peanut butter and birdseed on it, string some popcorn as garland and let the birds and squirrels have a Christmas treat! When they're done you can throw the whole tree away.

Normally, they have a day to put out your tree for it to be picked up. I'm not sure who you would contact, but normally if you go to your city website, they might have that info.

Where do you live? If in a rural area, just put it outside somewhere and let it be a natural habitat for birds, bunnies, etc. City - let them take it and burn it. Here they use themn for ash or fertilizer or something.

Put it outside, if it is a real tree, it can become a fire hazard.
