I will disagree with some of what's been written here so far. While some of these cars have had problems, the vast majority have not. In my years of tracking Porsches, I've never observed any unsual transmission issues with the many 944s that are tracked. They are extremely reliable cars; the only real issue that usually pops up is with the a-arms on the 944 (and many of the early 928s had issues with the manual tranmission that was used, the automatic is generally considered reliable).
The problem here is really that neither of these cars are well suited to an inexperienced driver, or someone with bugetary limitations. Both likely situations with a 16 year old looking for a first car.
In terms of inexperience, despite the many years since they were produced, these cars are still capable of performance that could be very dangerous to a driver that didn't understand their limits or the cars. Such understanding comes only with the experience of actual driving.
And as far as budget, while these cars are often available for inexpensive prices right now, parts and skilled labor will have prices that reflect these were very costly vehicles when they sold new (and a major repair will quickly cost as much or more than your likely purchase price).
If you are set on a Porsche as a first car, an early, normally asperated 944 or the 924S would be much better options. Both are fun cars, but less likely to get an inexperienced driver in as much trouble. And the even lower pricing on these cars would likely allow you to choose an excellent example and keep some money in reserve for possible issues should they come up.

Both are outmoded design of older cars. The 928S was ended in 1997. The 944 Turbo had an even earlier demise in 1991.
Both were plagued with problems despite their popularity. The 944 front drive and rear transmission design resulted in clutch and drive line problems for the life of the production run.
The 928 experienced many fuel injection and electrical problems.
However if I was to choose which one of these dinosaurs I would resurrect it would be the 928S. There is nothing like the rumble of a V8.

Porsche's can cost a bit more than other cars to maintain but it is worth it. I would forget an automatic, if your going to get a Porsche get a manual or just go buy a honda or something. It defeats the purpose of the car. I would also go with the 944.

the 944 was one of my first cars, it has amazing handling, and you can get one fairly cheap because there were so many produced, that also makes it very easy to find parts. however neither of those cars have a good reputation for reliable driving... my 944 started overheating after a snapped axle on the first week, but in its defense i put cars to the limit

I hope you have a lot of money to maintain it, because both these cars are very high maintenance automobiles.
I think these are bad choices for your first car for a number of reasons.
