It's one of Jesus' parables. Interpretation? I think it means that God gives people talents for a reason, so that while they are here on earth, they are supposed to use those talents to the fullest, or else they would be taken away from them. These talents should be invested in things profitable to the kingdom of God, mainly saving souls from eternal damnation. God holds you responsible for not using those talents justly, and your unused talent would be awarded to someone who invested his in the right way.

A talent was a large sum of money. I interpret it as Jesus instructing us to make the most of whatever it is we have. In particular, fearfully guarding what we have and refusing to take advantage of it due to fear is clearly NOT the way to go.
