higher physics and i don't understand this part please help..thank you!

Think about it: If you went around a circuit loop (picking an arbitrary point as 0 volts) and the EMF's weren't all canceled out by the potential drops, you would end up where you started but with a non-zero EMF there . That's like walking around the block and ending up where you started, but find that the sidewalk is now several inches higher (or lower) than when you started.
