I'm 34 + 2 and for the past week or so, I have had bits of my plug coming out mixed with blood. I rang my labour ward and was told to do nothing, just wait it out and I should be in labour within a week. She said unless there is just blood on it's own without mucus then it's ok.

I also mentioned that twice this week, I have had really strong contractions every 3 mins for several hours. She was not concerned at all.

Is this normal? I would have thought she would have been worried as she says I should be in labour by 35 weeks! This is my second baby, first born at 37 weeks weighing 9lb12oz.

Well I'm surprised that she said it was ok. 34 weeks is condsidered premature. It may not be safe for your baby to be born yet. The baby's lungs may be surprisingly developed and mature even it its born this early, but they just as likely may not. 37 weeks is considered full term but even then, most women go closer to 40 weeks. It definately sounds like you have lost your mucus plug or have lost some of it. I would say you will be having this baby early. Make sure and keep a close eye on these contractions. Continue to montior how far apart they are and how long they last and how strong they are. Does laying on your left side and drinking a glass of water help? Do they stop if you get up and walk around doing stuff? If those two things help or cause the pains to subside, then they are not real contractions. If you really start to think you are in labor, I would get to the hospital immediately because this baby may not be able to breathe on its own if its born now. If I were you, I would probably jump in the car and go to the hospital and get checked anyway. I would hate to see this baby be born and have complications because its lungs are not ready.

I think it is important to contact your doctor or nurse practitioner for a second opinion based on your personal history.

With my second baby I lost the plug in bits and pieces, and then one HUGE thing, more than a month before he was born. I had regular contractions that were extremely strong every night about 6 pm, so I wasn't able to get dinner or do anything but sit on the couch, but they always went away after a few hours. My son finally arrived exactly two weeks late and over 9 lbs. Labor is a weird, unpredictable thing.

Still, I agree that you shouldn't be complacent about the possibility of going into labor early. They have things that can help a baby's lungs mature if they know it will be a preemie, and you might want to be looking into them. There are also tests that can determine how independent/developed the baby is at this point.

Good luck! I hope that all goes smoothly and that you have a wonderful, healthy baby. :)

If you start bleeding equal or more than a period then go to L&D or your doctor to get checked...... When you lose your mucus plug it can be blood tinged mine was and I lost it at 33weeks and spotted for a couple days then at weeks 36 I started bleeding again and they told me it was from cervical change!! Good luck!!

Holy hell you make HUGE babies! Almost a ten pound baby 3 weeks before a due date... GAH!

No it is normal. Its not so much normal to have bloody show so early, but in your case (since you have super babies) its probably okay.

You will have strong contractions at this point in your pregnancy anyway.

Just do what they say and be still and calm, you want to make it to 36 weeks is at all possible.

When you are in true labor you will know it, the contractions will be so harsh you won't be able to stand it. Relax for now. You will be alright.
