2W + 2H2O → 2WOH + H2
2W + O2 → 2W2O
Both reactions will proceed spontaneously at normal temperature & pressure.

a) an element with group one
say for example sodium
2Na + 2H20 --> 2NaOH + H2
W + H2O > WOH + H2
So we can say that when an element from group 1 reacts with water we get a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas. This will be a violent reaction as any group 1 element reacts violently with water. Heat will be released, and effervescence will be visible.
b)say for example sodium
4Na + O2 --> 2Na2O
W + O2 --> W20
We can say that when an element from group 1 reacts with oxygen, we get a metal oxide. Group 1 elements also react violently with oxygen, so heat will be released and maybe a flame. This is why group 1 elements are stored under oil
Hope this helps.

Elements from the first group I are called alkali metals. They are the most reactive elements.
a)W + H2O = WOH + H2
Every element from the first group (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) reacts violently with water, reaching the proportions of a huge explosion for Fr. Hydrogen gas instantly burns because of the huge heat of reaction, also depending of the mass of metal used.
b) W + O2 = W2O2
When an alkali metal reacts with oxygen, it NEVER forms an oxide, but a peroxide, W2O2. For example, Na2O2 - sodium peroxide.
Alkali metals react very easy with the oxygen in the air. They mustn't be left uncovered because they cover their surface with oxide. The most reactive alkali metals explode when left in open space (starting from potassium, K). That's why they are kept in bottles with organic substances as petrol.
Hope that helps! Louise

W will react violently with water, releasing hydrogen gas and forming the metal hydroxide
W + H2O > WOH + H2
W will react with oxygen to form the metal oxide.
W + O2 > W2O

2W + 2H2O ==> 2WOH + H2
Observations:-Fizzing(due to production of H2)
-The piece of W will be moving around the . apparatus(faster if more reactive)
4W + O2==> 2W2O
Observations: -W will burn in oxygen with a colored flame(exothermically- heat released)
-A crystalline solid produced at the end

with water, hydroxide and release of hydrogen. With oxygen, oxide will be formed depending the reactivity of the metal.
