Both.
-Men act like they are interested for reasons other than sex.
-Women act more passive, more supportive and less selfish than they really are.
Each gender has a hidden motive or two:
Men: A consistent source of sex, a baby maker and/or a mommy.
Women: A second income, a way to have kids before its too late, someone to call when they need something, a crutch, a source of stability.
I'm speaking in general. Not EVERY man or EVERY woman btw
EDIT: Glad to... bottom line is women go into relationships with their own selfish interests just like men. They may care about you, but they care more about themselves and what you can bring into THERE lives. They know men are suckers for passive, girly-girl women. So once a woman meets a man/sucker that she believes to be marriage material (a.k.a deep pockets and unlikely to be able to attract a better woman than her) she will put on the passive, supportive, best girlfriend in the world act (yes I said ACT.. because in reality no woman is all that great). This act will last until you put a ring on her finger and walk her down the aisle. Then the act goes away and its all about HER and the kids. She is no longer that perfect angle she once was and the only way you will ever see that side of her again is if you show her that you can do better.. and WILL do better if she doesn't behave.

Why would I want to put on an act? Don’t you think most men would see through the act? I mean, I’m a good actress, but eventually I would let me guard down, “show my a55”, and the guy would dump me.
So why not be honest from the get go?

Neither should hide or act. The whole point of dating is to get to know eacother and find out if you are compatiable. If you hid stuff and acted unlike yourself what would be the point? When you got together, you'd be completely different.

Clothes will help to hide figure flaws.
Makeup blends out complexion woes.
Both genders put best foot forward.
Everyone must keep on their toes.
Haven't had any experience.
I'm thinking it's fifty fifty.
Must chalk it up to random chance,
That your date's someone who's shifty.
You'd hide your most common mistakes.
All those that you were to blame for:
Temper tantrums, psychotic breaks,
Or that you are merely a bore.
C. :)!!

For those who do "put on an act"
Men do it in hopes of obtaining some sex.
Women do it in hopes of obtaining some love/security.
Mike T.: Good addition. It does seem some (many?) people marry out of fear of being alone.

Well let's see, If I say men, then you and your buddies will go into thumbs down overdrive.
If I say women, The same happens in reverse.
Instead, I'll say what I believe to be the truth: It's specific to the individual in question. Gender has nothing to do with it.

Dating is a minefield, that is part of the excitement. Otherwise we would attend the local supermarket and pick one from the shelf labelled dates, presumably, in varying colours, creeds, sizes and scents.....how boring would that be....
