I have heard that they get paid poorly. If so how do the artist such as Masashi Kishimoto survive without any cash at all?

If you get the Artist Market 2008 you'll find pay rates for things in there. Manga, unfortunately, does not have a huge demand in the business world so if you're stuck in that genre you're looking at low pay rates.

By contrast,single panel cartoons go for $50-$300 each.

The Artist Market book is available in bookstores, or you can check out older copies from the reference section at your local library.

Probably very little. There's a whole lot of truth to the 'starving artist' cliche. I know from experience T.T

I guess he must REALLY love his job because I wouldn't stick around with a pay like that...
