They shouldn't. Everything she puts into her body gets into her milk - and you don't want a baby who is addicted to nicotine (not to mention all the crap that the tobacco companies put in with the tobacco). Also, there is the issue of second-hand smoke - you know it is dangerous for anyone, but imagine what it must do to those delicate, newborn lungs.

edit to add: The shouldn't SMOKE - not "they shouldn't breastfeed." They should quit the smoking and keep the breastfeeding.

and KUDOS to you for quitting smoking! I love to see a parent who has the presence of mind to put the needs of their child before their own desires!

Justplainsweet, how can breastfeeding while smoking help counteract the chemicals in cigarettes when it are those chemicals that end up in the breast milk. It doesn't make any since. And formula babies are just as healthy as breastfed babies. Maybe you need to do a little research and quit smoking.

You can but you shouldn't. Everything you eat or put in your body, the baby gets.
I had a friend that did this and her daughter have a lot of health issues and constant doctor and hospital trips. Now she (the daughter) smokes.
Just think of the tar and nicotine you have in your lungs. If you got an X-Ray of your lungs as a smoker, you would throw-up. My husband smokes and when he got his X-Ray back, he got sick and quit. My friend I was talking about earlier, husband just passed away from lung cancer. He was only 52 years young. He smoked since he was 14 years old.

I smoked when I breastfed my 3. It is definitely not recommended, since the nicotine will pass to the baby. Never, ever smoke during feeding time, and try not to smoke in the house/car with baby. I understand how difficult it is to stop smoking, so if you decide to smoke, at least be respectful of the baby's air...

Yuck. I would hopefully think any woman trying to do so, wouldn't. Everything you inhale or eat...goes to your baby. Besides, second hand smoke is just as bad. And your baby, regardless of what you think,,,will inhale the fumes off of your body. I know people that for years smoked. And when they finally quit,,,were amazed at how terrible people who smoke stink. Even when you think you don't,,,and you're doing everything you can to get rid of the smell...it stays on you. It stinks very badly...and I know I wouldn't want my baby breathing it.

I had been a long term smoker when I found out I was pregnant with my first baby. I quit for three days. I also had a history of drug use and alcohol use/abuse. I called my ob/gyn after three days and told him I was ready to use all 3. He said enjoy your cigarettes. I breast fed both my children and it didn't seem to affect them and both of them had normal birth weights. In fact one of them was 9lbs 7ozs. So I doubt that smoking has any negative effect on breast feeding. Good Luck.

Women who smoke can breastfeed their children however, it is not a wise decision because evrything she puts in her body will pass to her precious baby.

Its not exactly the best thing in the world to do, BUT (and I'll probably get thumbs down for this) it is better to smoke cigarettes and breastfeed than to smoke cigarettes and formula feed.

a mom who can't stop smoking should breastfeed. Breastfeeding provides many immunities that help your baby fight illness and can even help counteract some of the effects of cigarette smoke on your baby: for example, breastfeeding has been shown to decrease the negative effects of cigarette smoke on a baby's lungs. It's definitely better if breastfeeding moms not smoke, but if you can't stop or cut down, then it is better to smoke and breastfeed than to smoke and formula feed.

No. The nicotine can get into your milk and into the baby's body. Try to stop smoking for your baby. It's not safe or healthy for him/her.

They shouldn't. Everything that goes into her body, goes into the milk. Which is more important? The health of the baby or a few drags on a fag? Sadly, most smokers will choose the latter.
