Depressing is not the right word although I know where your mother is coming from. I remember when I went to see The Passion in the cinema. I went to see it out of curiousity not out of religous beliefs as i am not particularly religous. I could never have been prepared for what I saw. It doesnt even feel like a film, opening straight away, with no credits or hollywood feel, its more as if your watching these events happen before you, something incredibly powerful. Apart from one or two actors the rest are unknown, mostly of Italian nationality, and the fact that the dialogue is all spoken in latin and hebrew gives it that much more of authenticity. I could go on all day but its really something that you need to see for yourself. Right after seeing it in the cinema I went home and read the bible for a couple of hours. Be warned though, as said before its a very very graphic picture that holds no punches in its portrayal of the last hours of Jesus.

The film is very graphic and heart wrenching especially if you a strong believer in Jesus.
If you are over 18 and a believer I suggest a box of Kleenex on standby and prepare to be shocked.
I sat there in silence the whole way throught the film as I couldn't believe the amount of graphic detail that was in it and all the horrible things that happened to Jesus before he was eventually nailed to the cross.
If you dont like violence or blood I suggest you not watch it.

Your mom is right. The movie is very violent and very grim, but probably also a decent piece of education if you're at all of the Christian persuasion. It's worth watching on the "education" basis alone, but it's definitely NOT a movie to watch for fun.
Another thing to consider is what's your age? If according to the film's rating you're too young to see it, make sure that your watching it is OK by your mom.

I saw the movie Passion of the Christ and it did not depress me at all. It only made me want to cry at times. I could not believe that Jesus had went through so much pain. I would very much like to see the movie again so you should watch it if you can.

It's very, very, very graphically violent. I've never seen anything as graphic as that film. It makes you feel incredibly uncomfortable throughout, and leaves you in 'shock' afterwards. But I guess that's the whole point of it. I'd recommend everyone watches it at least once, but depends on your age I suppose. : )

I observed it. It grow to be like a snuff movie. i grow to be repulsed by applying it. I observed it in theater crammed with a community congregation. on the top of the movie their Pastor stood up and stated to the full room that each guy or woman there deserved to have that ensue to them. i grow to be disgusted to think of he truthfully believed that anybody, no longer to point anybody, deserved to be scourged and crucified. I walked out on that remark, basically to be accompanied by applying a member of the church who needed to be attentive to why i grow to be leaving. I advised him that if he truthfully believed the words popping out of his Pastor's mouth, he grow to be not greater advantageous than the Nazis who accompanied Hitler and that i could desire Hell to a Heaven crammed with people who think of everybody has ever deserved to be dealt with that way. i could think of that Christ could've thrown up his dinner, and left halfway via that violent misrepresentation of his existence.
