I was basically just driving down the freeway and it just turned off on me, it wants to start...its cranking over but it wont fire up and stay on. I replaced the ignition coil and the fuel pump is engaging when you turn the key over so it isn't the fuel pump, i also changed to fuel filter. My dad thinks the timing belt snapped? What can you guys think of? thanks for the help!

It could be the timing belt broke. When you crank the engine, does it sound normal or does it sound like it's spinning too fast. If it sounds too fast then it would be the timing belt. The good thing is, of all the Escorts I have seen with a snapped timing belt, none ended up with any valve damage.

That code is for a misfire. This can be caused by many things, plugs are just one (I hope you gapped them) , bad wires, wires in wrong firing order (you mixed them up) bad distributor cap and/or rotor just to mention a few. ... I don't know why you are linking a misfire to a bad alternator, but to check your alternator you need a voltmeter , running you should have approx 14 volts at the battery terminals. Key off approx 12V . I guess if your alternator was bad your voltage could drop enough to cause a misfire but if it will crank and the headlights are full brightness I'd say your battery and alternator are ok. You should also get a battery warning light that never goes out on the dash.

Rather than throw things at it, take it a step at a time.
1. Are you getting spark?
2. Is the belt broken?
3. Is the fuse blown?
4. If it starts, bit does not stay running, then focus on a fuel problem.
5. Air filter totally blocked?

It could be the computer, that is what happened to my wifes 95. She was driving then it died, would not restart, I changed everything until i got to the computer and ended up buying a newer car.

Have you checked to be sure there is gasoline in the tank? Running out of gas is the primary reason for cars to stop running while driving.

1. Spark (good spark = good timing belt and ECU)
-------(DLI system) No spark could be crank or cam sensor
-------(DLI system) No spark could be your computer
-------(Distributor system) No spark bad coil or bad computer
------- (both systems) no spark - bad timing belt
------- (both systems) no spark - bad computer
2. Last and not least is Fuel delivery system
-------(Carburated) bad carb or bad fuel pump
-------(injected) bad computer or bad fuel pump
