Yes and no
When I first started out yes, because I wanted to get to level two so I could rate answers.
Now the only reason I look for points is so I have ample points to ask questions, but more often I answer questions in the animal sections because that is my experience and I work for an animal shelter, at a lab, and have a degree in animal science. My full time job is spent educating the public, so its kinda my passion. Answering questions allows me to help people and animals, points or no points

No for the points but for the feeling:
I answer the questions i know best and i give many details to help the asker. So when i try my best and earn a "best answer" i just love it! It's satisfying and reminds me the feeling i had when i was a student and got the best grades.
Now i work as a teacher and i'm the one who gives the grades and say who is best so i miss the fact of trying to prove my knowledge and get acknowledged from others.
Really nice question.

The points is an initiative.
I have to admit that ever since I got my first best answer, I have been more inspired to answer more.
Now that I reached level 2 and can rate answers, a little of the initiative has gone.
I still answer questions because some people give crap answers (for points). It also keeps my brain fit and my wife has also caught the best answer bug after a question about Japan popped up (she is Japanese).

No, Poihnts really don't mean much to me since I can't spend them. Usually though I have a goal in mind when answering;
1.) Help the person because I think the question is legit
2.) Get a good laugh from people
3.) Be a total jerk to the person because they were an idiot for asking or couldn't ask it correctly.

No! I really don't care about the points. It's not like you win anything. I find questions interesting and voice my OPINION only. I have given and recieved a lot of great information from other's point of views. Just Sparkles adding her 2 cents in. =)

No, I answer questions because I am bored and some of them are just too interesting to pass and not answer them...like this one...because I know some people answer alot just for the points...

It defeats the whole purpose of having Yahoo! Answers. It is supposed to be a learning network but yes there are users who are like that. I don't personally.
