Counting sheep focuses your thoughts on something other than what you're worried about, releasing tension in you body which enables you to fall asleep.

Though this method is ingrained in popular culture, anything you can imagine, like waves pounding a beach, will:
Make you focus on something other than daily activities that would substitute relaxation for stress.
Become repetitive and rhythmic enough to cause slower brain waves, that are more conducive to sleep.
