Many of you ask where there are so many questions not worthy of philosophy, unless you make excuses for "pop" philosophy, or for poorly understood philosophy.
My answer is because Yahoo does not allow anything but questions, and serious philosophy often has more to do with throwing a theory out for discussion. We often cannot put a theory into a question, if we wish to say what we mean instead of hoping others understand the question.

That is my theory. That is my question. That is my answer.
When Yahoo allows philosophical theories to be presented, it will have become the philosophical forum many of us wish it was.

Indeed you are right in saying that.

Yahoo! sticks to the objective of the site. The site is called Yahoo! Answers. A discussion is not an answer...it leads to one...but it takes a while.

Perhaps Yahoo! should consider changing the name or creating a new site called: Yahoo! Forums

You make a very good point there. It is difficult to have a philosophical debate using a Q&A system. Still, every now and then I have seen a good question here.

I think if we use the format you are using in this "question" we could indeed have a great philosophical discussion. There is one other factor missing -- we really can't respond to other people who answer the initial question, which will keep any kind of debate or discussion very two dimensional. The reason why is that often there are four or five answers that will be generated at the same time, so that even if you say something along the lines of "In response to X's comment...," searching through all the answers to find it would detract from the flow of such a discussion overall.

Really, the best medium I've found for these kinds of discussions are the IRC channels, as responses are instant, all can view and respond not only to the initiator, but to responses as well, and can still be moderated so that childish, off-topic responses can be kicked, if necessary.

I understand your point, question and answer. This type of forum does however leave room for a slight discussion but only if the person answering is not just answering for points or any other agenda. I've seen comments be given and taken and then returned but that itself takes forever. Maybe someone can create a chat room and we all keep our fingers crossed that some lame teenager doesn't showup asking about Britney Spears.
I guess through all that rambling, I just needed to say I agree with you to an extent.

I agree 100%. Philosophy isn't even about 'questions and answers' anyway. It's all about the journey in between thought and manifestation. IMO, philosophy has no beginning (question) or end (answer)...it's more circular and meandering....picking up bits of wisdom along the way.

You are profound. This is something that I would like to have occur here on Yahoo Answers. This website is growing in a good way. I trust that it will happen soon.

Perhaps phrase the theory as a question.....Or, ask: "What do you think of this idea....?"
