To answer your question - animals are in zoos to protect some from extinction because humans are takinga way their natural habitat.
In this instance, they are not sure what happened as of yet. Two of the victims were at a cafe when mauled. It was only the one man whom they thought may have been taunting her. Investigation will tell. In the meantime a beautiful animal is dead.
It's too bad but they had to make a decision to "appease the public". Man takes away these animals habitat and we put them in confined spaces. No matter how nice they look nowadays when compared to what they were in years gone by, they are still not where they should be - in the wild. Some people actually feel that extinct is better than zoos. I'm not one of them and the zoos today are really trying.
The main thing is - some people suck big time. They tease and taunt the animals and then wonder why things like this happen. How many times have you seen little kids roaring at the lions? The parents should teach them respect.
Buffalo Zoo years ago. 3 boys trespassed into our zoo after hours & were throwing huge stones down on the polar bears. One kid fell in & the polar bear proceded to "play" with him, tossing him up & down, into the pool & out. The zoo personel had their tranquilizer guns at the ready but the police said "no" & shot them. One of the people I worked with was a photographer for the zoo & said that during the necropsy of the bears they had huge black & blue marks on them where the stones had hit them.
The one kid, whose butt got ripped off was a laywer's kid & was sent to our hospital. Arrogant SOB that he was, he thought all the attention was funny. We got death threats at the hospital. My friend brought him up to surgery, banging the cart into as many elevator walls as she could along the way. I was off that day, thank God, otherwise it would have been me scrubbing on his case. I heard he's a lawyer himself now. I'm not sure if he was ever charged with anything much other than trespassing.
Kids broke in another time into the children's zoo & beat one one of the Zebus. Thank God someone caught them & the animal recovered. Poor innocent thing. I would have beaten the kids with boards. Their parents teach them nothing.
Too bad the laws that say we must put down an animal that attacks & kills a human being when being mistreated does not exist for the murderers, rapists, etc. of the human variety that kill for pleasure.

I am with Solid Stewie and Varan on this one. Seriously, if the animal found a way out of the habitat it was just an accident waiting to happen. People want to fight for animals rights all over the place but I would never sacrafice myself or my children...17 year old son to be exact for any animal rare or not. The tiger couldn't vote, join the army or give to the charity. The human life wins.

I could not agree more, a tiger has its instinct and it is a human's own fault if they start teasing the animal. It should not have been shot, just tranq'd. But to some people an animal's life is worth absolutely nothing.

One dead man, Two injured - One dead tiger. I think the scales are tipped a little too far in the tiger's favor to begin with. I care about the lives of animals, yes, but if it came down to letting an animal live and letting a human live, I'd have to choose the human, and the animal be damned.
I guess I just have a bias towards my own species.

She was mauling one of the men when they found her. She started to attack the police. What else were they to do? They were first on the scene and did not have tranquilizer with them. She had already mauled one woman a year ago and now has killed and mauled again. Taunting a caged tiger is stupid and cruel but it does not equate with being killed by it. It is a shame that such a beautiful creature had to be put down but she was now a man killing tiger. We put down dogs that attack and kill because they might do it again and she was killed for the same reason. Sad but true.

Because law enforcement officers were the first people to arrive on the scene, and you don't want them to just carry slow acting darts in their .38s do you?
Unfortunately, Siberian tigers like Tatiana are safer in American zoos than in the wild in China where one was killed for its alleged medicinal properties earlier this month; thats why they are on the Endangered Species list.

The only thing I have to say is that Darwins natural selection theory is truly in play if the kid that got killed was taunting the tiger.
