Well, with my partner, I am the top. And I sleep at night with him holding ME usually. Us gay men don't have the traditionally male and female roles in our relationship.

Its all roll play top and bottom really as far as I can see after 63 years of gay life are the titles given to how you play in your relationships what fantasy, obsessions, and experiences you want to have or get by accident or blundering innocence [ though in these days the latter is less likely]. You have as a sexually active adult individual a responsibility to take for your actions safe sex , consensual sex, as well as how you do or do not want to play, casual, or long term courtship and commitment raising children or what ever many paths are available for gay men and women around the world theses days. Not so in mine in my youth to be a bottom meant that the older guy who held the chain attached to my collar was the voice I had to listen to if the collar was on or off no matter what he was my top and I was his bottom. An As it was illegal and I was younger guy here in the UK that meant that he would go to prison and I at least till i reached 18 would go to a children`s home. where I would be abused or might find a older boy to look after me for favors or I might be the top kid in the home it all depended. Now some people like to actually live by those rules some play and pass on to other things an grew to be whole rounded people. In some country's a top is not considered to be gay only the bottom is seen as gay and they are the ones hung and stoned to death. It is also true in many society's like that that the woman is seen as the whore and the temptress and stoned for the males adultery. So there is a serious side to this discussion Though I personally feel If you love some one you go where every you have to go and do what ever you have to do to make the experience of your love work for each other !

Generally the top tends to be more masculine and take on typical male duties in the relationship and the bottom seems to take on more of a females role. However it does not have to be that way.
(Example: I am the top in a sexual reference, i am the bottom in the relationship.) I think that no matter what sexual position is preferred both should try to treat the other with respect.

The best part about being gay is you do not need to follow anyone's ideas regarding what roles should be in a relationship. The partners do what works best for them at that time and place and the best partnerships are the ones in which both partners take care of each other!

If you feel awkward having one be on top the other on bottom, switch every other night or just "do it" laying on your sides.

Actually, the terms "top" and "bottom" are more generally used in the SM culture to mean Sadist and Masochist, repectively, they also often connotate Dom and Sub.
