A naturally reserved person has only had had a few close friends throughout her life. Her natural personality is sweet and kind and she has a huge heart. Majority of the friends she has had over the years have left her or criticized her because she didn't meet their standards. Could this potentially cause a person in their adult life to feel guarded, cautious and shy when making friends?

Yes it will. Speaking for myself, those that have caused drama or hurt to my life by trying to force me to see things their way or to do things I care not to do, I stay away from them and had rather be my own best friend than depend on the thoughts or idea of others.

Its peaceful and productive for me to stay in my own world. I prefer my own space and enjoy being who I am along with being my own independent person.
I do guard who may or may not influence my life. To me thats being sane & in control.

Perhaps a self registration wuold help to understand the errores in self thinking that would drive people away. And dont be surprised that this happens. It will be happening all her life. Friends come and go and just because this goes on is no reason to self afflict oneself over it. If I had a penny for all the people who dont think like me I'd be a billionair.

This person is "naturally" reserved...so....unless there is a major psychic change, she will continue to be so as an adult. There is NOTHING wrong with her...she is good enough just as she is. Sometimes, life events prompt us to rethink our positions and attitudes and change is possible. But there is nothing wrong with this person.

It really could. Having people leave you throughout your life can absolutely make you guarded toward others that come in it.
