BIG GUILTY HERE....it's my book Wally, I want to be able to remember certain things, this way I can find them! Heck, I even write in the column on the outside of the page, and now and then I will fold the an ear over on the page! I don't do this on all books... just a few!

As far as books go, if I have borrowed the book, I don't write in the at all. If the book is mine, I will write my name in them. Other than that, I will put a book marker as to where I am in it. The only book that I will put a mark in besides my name is a cook book. Even then it has to be mine before I will do that.
Manuals, now that is a different thing. I will highlight stuff in them so that I can find stuff faster once I have found it the first time.
It does not bother me that much to see where some one wrote in a book, notes or what ever as long as it is not where the writing is at in the book.

Yes, don't you hate that? Sometimes I get a book out of the library and find someone has written a "review" of it on the flyleaf (usually something like "don't bother reading this, its rubbish"), or they correct a piece of grammar, or underline a few lines. It amazes me that anyone would think that their ideas were so important that they could deface a library book like that.
One thing that I find hilarious, is where some people put a mark or their initials on a particular page. Presumably this is to let them know in the future, that they have already read it. Something like a dog "marking its territory". All I can say is, that they must read like some people eat - just shoving it in and then forgetting what they have consumed.
To misquote George Orwell, we're all different, but some are more different than others !

I have never found the need to write on the pages of my books.. except maybe my cook books. I did borrow a book from the library once, and some kind hearted person had inked out all the bad words. I suppose they thought I would appreciate that. I did not.

I buy new books so that I can mark them up with highlights and notes and I write my name on them because I intend to be a member of the clergy one day and may loan books out to congregants. But I would never mark up someone else's book or a library book. Nor would I donate a marked book to the library. Marking up books with graffiti is a sign someone's momma didn't raise 'em right.

This is definately a pet peeve of ours! There is something sacred about books and for someone to deface them really upsets us....me especially.
We used to go to a church in the town where we used to live and everyone in our Bible class used highlighter pens to mark certain passages.....that really upset me as the Bible should never be defaced in that way. They tried to get us to mark special readings but we refused every time. I left my Bible unattended whilst I went to the loo and when I came back someone had marked a passage with bright yellow highlighter pen!! It is still there to this day and it still annoys me no end! I haven't attempted to erase it because the pages are very thin and delicate and I'm frightened it will tear so it is there forever! xx

The books we buy are ours to do with as we choose. I don't make notes in the margins of mine, but I'd feel no compunctions about doing it.
I buy a lot of used books and a lot of them have names of previous owners and their notes. It doesn't bother me... when they made the notes they owned the book and had every right to do with it as they chose.
After every library book sale and at every used book store in this country tons of books that didn't move are hauled to the landfills to lied down with the other trash of this society. It's apparent they aren't viewed as sacrosanct by a majority of the population.
It's a happy enough circumstance anyone buys and reads them at all, no matter how they treat them afterward.

What a DOUCHE. good for Orton & Cena, Chavo is a douche too. This guy did no longer do something to him. yet, Did Mark Henry, the guy who used to compete in weightlifting competitions relatively think of that some Wrestling fan could combat him? BQ: confident. So does Chavo.

I HATE THAT. I got a book from the library once and some complete and utter idiot felt it necessary to write comments in the margin and 'correct' what he felt were mistakes.
It was an historical novel and altho based around real people and events in medieval england it was mainly fiction. I wanted to scream!!!! I pointed it out to the librarian when I returned it hoping they could figure out who did it.

I only do this with MY own books. Usually it is not a work of fiction but occasionally it is. A fact, a turn of phrase womething catches my attention that I want to remember or return to later so I may highlight it.
