They both had many effects. I'l give you some history. Since the US was founded, slavery was a topic on which the nation was split. The Missouri Compromise (Compromise of 1820) set a specific line which allowed slavery to the south, and banned it to the north. With the rapid territorial expansion from 1820-1855, the issue of slavery in the territories was paramount. After the Mexican-American War, the United States gained millions or acres of land from Mexico, from Texas all the way to California to Montana. The big question was, "Will we allow slavery in these territories?" According to the Northwest Ordinance, slavery didn't have to be decided until a territory applied for statehood, which required a specific population. When the goldrush began, western territories became populated much more quickly, and the issue of slavery came quickly to the forefront. When the Supreme Court struck down the Compromise of 1820 via the Dred Scott case, how to decide the fate of the territories became a hot issue. This issue, which was fiercely geographical, ultimately brought on the Civil War much earlier than it may have been.

The treaty established the RÃo Bravo del Norte or RÃo Grande as the dividing line between Texas and Mexico;
