if you have a aquarium thermometer, it will have a green strip at between 72 and 80 or so. just try to keep it in the middle of the green :) 76-77 is ideal for most fish. That other gentleman mentioned cycling you fishtank. that is a very important thing to do, but you can cheat a little and speed it up and still have a stable tank. If you know someone else, family member or friend/coworker, who keeps fish; you can take a cutout piece of a dirty filter of theirs and put it in the front of your filter. It will propagate micro organisms into your water that will stabilize the water quality. if you know of a little mom and pop type fish store, i would ask the staff about that. they work their because they love fish and would i'm sure be happy to share a slimey piece of filter if it would help your tank.

Make sure to cycle the aquarium before adding fish. Or your son will be heartbroken at all the dead fish.

The best temperature is 76-78 degrees for freshwater fish. Good luck!

For tropical fish, keep the tank somewhere between 23 and 26*C. Unless it's a betta fish, which like slightly higher temps of around 25-28*C.

Anything higher than 28*C is boiling the fish.
