It depends what you are seeking to achieve and what the car manufacturer has decided. It is generally recognised that front wheel drive is intrinsically safer than rear wheel drive. The engine weight is over the driven wheels which gives greater traction under most conditions. From a standing start rear wheel drive affords better grip as the weight is temporarily transferred to the rear wheels. You pays your money and takes your choice as they say.

If you are not an expert, but want to learn how to do it without memorizing all the models that have rear wheel drive: look under any large pickup truck. You see that big round thing under the truck that both the axles from the wheels go to? That's called a rear differential. A rear wheel drive car will have one too.

Look inside the front wheels and see if there is an axle going from the transmission to them or look in the rear to see if there is an axle going to the rear wheels. You can also have a friend watch while you do a fast start from a stop and see which tires break loose and leave a mark on the pavement.

the easiest way is to look under your car and check for a rear gear box.
stand behind your vehicle face your license plate and bend down all the way to the ground and look. what you are looks like a big ball the size of a volleyball centered between the two rear tires.
if you vehicle has this it is a rear wheel drive. if it does not it is front wheel drive
if it has one between the front wheel also then it is 4 wheel drive

find a sandy or wet spot road or parking lot. put the vehicle in drive and step on the gas all the way like you r late for work. after you hear the tire spinning, stop the vehicle and go outside of the vehicle . watch for tire burning mark. if the tire burning mark is from the rear, you have a rear wheel drive vehicle. if the tire burning mark is from the front, you have a front wheel drive.

open the hood, if the engine is mounted sideways, then it is front wheel drive....another thing you look at, if the engine belts are facing the side of the car and not the front, then it is front wheel drive....a rear wheel drive will have a driveshaft going to the rearend and the floor board in the backseat will have a "hump" in it...

Unless you have a muscle car like a Corvette or a Mustang, or a luxury car like a Mercedes or Lexus - most newer American, Japanese and Korean cars are front wheel drive. Even most SUVs are front wheel drive.
