This is a poor design by GM. The park mechanism which sits on top of the motor is designed in such a way that when the park position is requested the mechanism aligns itself up in such a way that a small indent will now be in a position to catch a metal stop that is part of the wiper transmission and will now synch the wipers to properly park. Well what happens is this metal stop bends and then the park mechanism now has no way to catch the stop when park is requested. Sometimes the park mechanism tab will actually break if it does catch this bent tab. Either way to successfully repair this you can install a reinforcement tab at the stop or buy a new wiper transmission and/or park mechanism. There is a specific alignment when reinstalling the above mentioned parts. If not done correctly then you take a chance of damaging the assembly again.

This is a common problem that happens when water gets on the wiper motor drive mechanism. If someone is mechanically inclined you can fix by: Position the wiper blades in the straight up position. Remove the wiper arms.Disconnect the washer supply hose. Remove the plastic cowl along the bottom of the windshield, there are 3 plastic "screvits" and one threaded plastic screw about 1" diameter on the passenger side. Pull the cowl up in the middle to remove it. Remove the snap on plastic cover on the wiper motor to expose the return mechanism. Spray the whole mechanism down liberally(a lot) with WD-40 or another good penetrating oil. Take a small screwdriver and gently pry the spring loaded 3/8th" by 3/4th" tab under the mechanism which should be in about the 4 o'clock position when viewed from the front of the car. This is the part that is frozen and doesn't catch correctly on it's stop. Cycle the wipers on and off and watch the wiper shafts to see if they reverse and go into the park position. You can also see the return spring working on top of the wiper motor. Re-install in the reverse order making sure you have the wipers shut off and in the park position before putting the wiper arms back on.

I just fixed mine. They did the same thing as yours are doing. You basically need to go to a junk yard and pull a working wiper motor from another grand prix. I believe grand ams are the same as well. If you aren't keen on doing that you can always buy a new one. They are a little pricey from the dealer, and they are a PAIN to put in. They are a VERY tight fit for a rather large contraption. You will need to take the wiper arms off, remove the plastic covering at the bottom of the windshield and it sits below the wiper arm on the drivers side. Good luck, just remember if you get one from a junk yard, it's not guaranteed to work.

The wiper arm mechanism inside the cowl was damaged, perhaps when ice or snow was on the windshield and the wipers were turned on. You will need to take it to a Pontiac dealer to have a new wiper mechanism put in. It's not something that can be reset.

It a mechanical problem with the motor. When you turn the wipers off, a small tab is supposed to catch the motor to keep the wipers down but if it misses, the wipers will stay up. I just shimmed a washer in and works fine.
