The light only detects an error and the error codes don't tell the technician what's wrong with your car. They only tell him what diagnostic procedures to use to actually find the problem. That's what your paying an experienced technician for. His or her training and experience using sophisticated test equipment, repair theory and data and his knowledge to track down the problem. If it was always easy to do, then you would always just do it yourself. It's no different then going to any professional to do something you need that you can't do yourself. Doctors, lawyers, dentists etc. You can, however read the OBD-II error codes out yourself:

the check engine light or M.I.L. light can come on for a lot of reasons....but mostly do to a sensor that has detected a problem and the ECM logs it, if the car is a 1996 or newer....i need to know what the code was or what they told you was wrong with it to give you a better idea, but the most common reasons are your gas cap is loose or has failed or the oxygen sensors in the exhaust detect a overly rich mixture of fuel or a lean mixture of fuel....

depending on what vehicle you have the check engine light can come on for over 200 you ld have a local garage hook their diagnostic computer to it to check trouble codes if your concerned, or if your having some driveability issues. the check engine light can come on for something small as you forgot to tighten your gas cap
without a diagbnostic its impossible to answer

Take off the negative battery cable, let it stay off for a few minutes, then put it back on. If the light comes back on after a while, buy a code reader.

The check engine can be any little thing or maybe something big you will need to get it diagnosed so they can see whats the problem.
