Letter To Me by Brad Paisley
edit: I just listened to both songs Letter To Me and Startin With Me. Now I think the first answer is right, it is Startin With Me by Jake Owen.
Here is a link to the video.

You could be talking about alot of songs...
but im thinking...
"Letter to me" By: Brad Paisley
This song talks about him at his age right now...and he is writing a letter to himself at age 17...and telling himself not to fail algebra and to keep gass in the car, etc.
You could also be talking about...
"Startin' with Me" By: Jake Owen
This song is about a man who is looking back on his life and saying how he would change the way he drank and etc...
Hope I helped!

yep I agree, its Jack Ingram Called "Measure of a Man"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIG7VKmOg7s
When I was fifteen, I left home young
Tore up the tracks and then some
Me and my dad didn't see eye to eye
I never took to him, he never took the time
Bullet proof, more than tough
Smarter than he ever was
CHORUS
Well I burned those wheels down the highway
And I learned what I learned the hard way
Do the best you can do, love many, trust few
Work hard for the money in your hands
That's the measure of a man
Yeah the measure of a man
Anger burns, love cools it down
Pretty young woman turned my head around
The world through her eyes looked so different
She lives on faith, she looks for forgiveness
Fool proof, it ain't easy
I need her, she needs me
CHORUS
She stole my heart on this highway
She taught me to love through the hard days
Yeah she's cool when I'm not, she's as steady as a rock
She's as solid as the ring on my hand
That's the measure of a man
Yeah the measure of a man
Last night she handed me a son of my own
It killed me to do it, but I picked up the phone
CHORUS
Hey dad I burned ten years down this highway
And I learned what I learned the hard way
Truth is I need you, we'll cry if we need to
And I'll swallow my pride if you can
That's the measure of a man
Oh yeah, the measure of a man

Brad Paisley's "Letter to Me" is pretty recent - he's grown up and sings about writing a letter to his 17 year old self. In one part he says "just assume you're wrong and daddy's right"
Not sure if that's what you're looking for though because he's not really talking so much about changing things as telling a teenager to calm down, he's doing good and everything turns out fine.

"Startin' With Me" by Jake Owen
I had a one night stand with my best friends baby sister
And to this day he still won't speak to me
I pawned my grandpa’s old guitar in collage
For a case of beer and a tank of gasoline
I took a swing at my old man one Christmas
I never dreamed that it would be his last
I wish mom had rung my neck
When she caught me with those cigarettes
Which reminds me, I’m down to my last pack
If I had a dime
For half the things I did
That didn’t make no sense at all
I’d be living a little higher on the hog
If only I’d have known
That later on down the road
I’d look back and not like what I see
I’d have changed a lot of things
Startin’ with me
I called my brother everything I could think of
The night he wouldn’t bail me out of jail
I lost a job most folks ‘round here would die for
By laying out all night and raising hell
And I let a woman that I love slip through my fingers
Chalk another dumb move up to my foolish pride
I wasn't there standin’ by the bed
When the preacher bowed his head
With the family, the day my grandma died
If I had a dime
For half the things I did
That didn’t make no sense at all
I’d be living a little higher on the hog
If only I'd have known
That later on down the road
I’d look back and not like what I see
I’d have changed a lot of things
Startin’ with me
If only I’d have known
That later on down the road
I’d look back and not like what I see
Whoa, I’d have changed a lot of things
Startin’ with me
Startin’ with me
