Correct...

Manual gearboxes are significantly cheaper to repair than an auto 'box..

The poster who talked about clutch replacement may have a point... If you drive like an idiot... And clutch replacement is a cheap job compared to an automatic repair, which usually involves the box being replaced as it's cheaper than fault finding and fix.

I've had both, over the past 20 years, I've never had a manual box 'go'.. I have had mounting brackets snap and clutches that needed replacing, all of which were fixed within a day or two..

When my Auto Audi A6 went *pop* and started selecting random gears, the Audi dealer suggested that it might be cheaper to buy another car than to have it repaired or replaced..

Normally, the only maintenance a manual trans. requires is on the clutch. Since your clutch will wear out over time, you will eventually need to replace it. Replacing the clutch can be a simple and relatively inexpensive proposition unless you let it go to far. If not replaced when needed, it can wear down beyond it's use-full point and then damage other components within the clutch pack. Your not likely to do that since when the clutch starts to slip, which is the signal to have it replaced, you will want to do it. A slipping clutch is very annoying and most people will want to fix it then, rather than continue driving it. All in all, a manual trans. is cheaper to maintain. Even if you needed to replace the entire system (clutch and transmission, almost never happens) it would more than likely be cheaper than replacing an automatic trans.
Hope this helps.

Both transmissions are really expensive to repair..... having said that, the manual transmissions last way longer. You will have to put in a new clutch at some point, but that can be done yourself, or in a shop, but it will be way cheaper than rebuilding an automatic transmission.

Yes, manual transmissions are simpler and easier to fix. However, if I were you I would not worry about it and get the type of transmission that meets your needs. A properly driven and maintained automatic transmission will last well over a 100,000 miles.

Its as much as you as there are a mass of relaxing automatic form vehicles obtainable as nicely as instruction manual, the challenge is people see the call automatic and yet have had no or little journey with them and don't appriciate the certainty that automatics are available a mass of varieties which could be a procedures from putting a vehicle in d and then going. many times vehicle makers locate an automatic form field greater advantageous suits there vehicles and we come across vehicles like the Buggati Veryron and the Ferrari Enzo etc with an automatic form setup and this even is going right down to greater much less costly fashions of vehicles. So extremely the respond is what suits your desires and suits that motor vehicle greater advantageous as purely whilst you evaluate it extremely is presented in a instruction manual form does not make it greater advantageous.

i would say the manual transmission is cheaper in the long run, as long as you know how to drive one without grinding gears and you gas mileage should be a little better with a manual vs. automatic....but if you live in a place where there are alot of steep hills at stop lights, then you might want to go with the automatic..

It is true. They are cheaper and easier to fix. I've done both. However, they rarely require any maintenance of any kind. The clutch does require replacement every decade or so, but that's cheap and easy.

i agree with your husband. two clutches even at the higher end of 500 each is still cheaper than 1800-2500 to repair an auto- and even after a rebuild you still have a chance of it not working right unless you take it to a shop that will put all of the updates in it, and guarantee their work.

any transmission repair job is expensive. Manuals are cheaper and easier to maintain, cheaper to buy, and better mpg's.

They're all expensive to fix. I had a Ford Van that got 343,000 N.Y.C. miles on an auto. so no one saves money by getting a manual trans. And there's no reason a clutch can't last well over 100,000 miles. Just don't slip it.
