If the title of the list was "Most Popular Songs of the 90's" then it might be more accurate, but they're definitely not the greatest songs of the 90's.

I looked at the complete list and they're missing two obvious bands... Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails. Garbage, Tool, as well as a few other bands should of definitely made it on the list too.

The problem with VH1 is everything is geared toward an older generation of music listeners. As such, their method of attracting people to the programming is the "reminisce" angle. It's never actually been about what was good at the time, it's always been about making the viewer say "Oh yeah, I remember that!" followed by some laughter.
That's why they push those " I Love The 80's/90's" shows all the time. They have the same appeal as the lists.

***I was too impatient to get to the end, but the list was determined by an online vote (600,000 people). That's more upsetting than thinking VH1 is at fault.

I'm not sure it's as much "Greatest" as it is influencing

I would never say "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the greatest song of the 90's, or even the greatest song by Nirvana. But it brought about one huge change in music. The Backstreet Boys in their own right renewed the Boy Band craze, having NSYNC and all that other crap right behind them. Britney brought about the Girl Power, followed by Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson. And so on and so forth.

Besides, it's VH1. They know mainstream, not talent.

Well, I don't agree with all of them, but I think several of the choices are correct.

Destiny's child was the debut of Beyonce and she has rocketed up the chart. Hammer was all over the world with his song. Nirvana changed music. Alannis was the leader of the girl craze and that may be the best song of the decade.

Throw out Hanson - no substance at all and
Sinead O'Connor - Prince wrote and recorded the song in 1981.

To conclude- now i know why I revert back to the good ole days of rock...Give me the 70's!

As I read the list I can't believe they had some songs that are not great but only popular. Just because a song is done by artist (s) appealing to certain crowd, that does not mean it is great. Thus, while I see great songs in the above list, they are in the wrong order, and some of the other songs don't even deserve being in there. Furthermore, some the artists with real talents above have some other songs that might as just be the greatest.

I think they also had songs that had a impact on our culture, not just songs that are great. The Backstreet Boys and boy bands were a big part of the 90's. So was Nirvana and Grunge.

If they did it based on the quality of the songs, they really messed up.

this is terrible, i can't list in any amount of space how horrible this list is...i mean, what's up with the rap songs and madonna/britney spears/backstreet boys ahead of a meaningful and amazing song like losing my religion?...and some of the songs that made the list are ridiculous, achy breaky heart are you kidding me?

with all the stupid rap and hip hop and pop music on there, it's no wonder why all that is the mainstream sound of today, it's because of stations like vh1 and mtv promoting this ******* bullshit

Not even close in my opinion.
The 90's were my favorite decade for music and I hate 14 of the 20 songs on their list.

#1 was an overplayed joke. There were way better songs by Nirvana.

Maybe with 25% of it. This is a horrible list that makes me shake my head and openly question VH-1's credibility. How can they truly believe these are the twenty best songs of the decade? Obviously, they have an entire different set of criteria if they think it's appropriate to include boy-banders. That Whitney Houston song alone serves as proof that horrible music is possible during any time period.
